Sasaki Shrine
Sasaki Shrine is located in Azuchi-cho,
Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture.
Shinto is the indigenous faith of the Japanese. It has been an integral part of Japanese culture since ancient times. Sasaki Shrine is one of the Shinto shrines in Shiga prefecture.
It lies approximately 800 meters south of JR Azuchi Station.
It was founded by the Sasaki Yamakimi clan, a powerful family with records of serving as magistrates of Gamo County since the Nara period.
Toward the end of the Heian period, when the power of the Sasaki clan weakened, the Uda Genji Sasaki clan ruling the nearby Sasaki Sho estate arrived there.
It is unclear whether the original clan was driven out or assimilated, but afterward, the name "Sasaki clan" came to refer to the latter, and they continued to worship Sasaki Jinja as their guardian deity.
Established in 927 AD, as recorded in the Engishiki Jinja List, Sasaki Shrine enshrines four shrines and five deities: Sukunahikona-no-kami, Ohiko-no-kami, Emperor Nintoku, Emperor Uda, and Prince Atsumi. Collectively, they are revered as Sasaki Daimyojin.
Sukunahikona-no-kami, possessing a vast knowledge of sake brewing, crop cultivation, medicine, and pharmacology, assisted the great deity Okuninushi in nation-building. Due to these legends, he is worshiped as the god of medicine, hot springs, healing, and national tranquility.
Emperor Uda and Prince Atsumi are enshrined as ancestors of the Uda Genji, Sasaki Genji, and Omi Genji clans. They are revered as the origin of the Sasaki surname and the tutelary deity of the Sasaki Genji clan.
Eight large-scale shrine buildings, the main hall, subsidiary hall, and worship hall, rebuilt by the Marugame Clan and the Kyogoku family, are designated prefectural cultural properties.
